(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) – Four Christopher Newport University Leadership Studies students attended the prestigious United States Naval Academy's (USNA) Leadership Conference in Annapolis, Maryland January 25-28, 2009. These CNU students are Patrick Bryant, Katie Dolan, Laura Harrison, and William Murray. They were accompanied by Dr. Bob Colvin, chair of the Department of Leadership and American Studies.
The theme of the conference was "Generational Leadership." As the transfer of power shifts from baby boomers to "millennials," (or Gen Y), the paradigm of leadership necessary to be effective is being examined. These two generations may differ on perspectives toward work ethic, work-life balance, communication style, use of technology, and how to "get the job done."
The mission of the USNA Leadership Conference is to "bring together the best minds in the practice and study of leadership to exchange ideas, experiences and methodologies with both military and civilian students." The conference involved nearly 200 military and civilian college students and faculty from more than 30 national colleges and universities, such as Auburn, Bucknell, CNU, Duke, Harvard, Penn State, Rice, Stanford, Texas A&M, Tufts, UNC, US Military Academy, US Naval Academy, and VA Tech. The conference was sponsored by the Hart Foundation and the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1938.
