( Newport News ) – Mark Kramer, founding director of the influential Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism at Harvard University, will speak on Tuesday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m. in the Studio Theater at Christopher Newport University 's Ferguson Center for the Arts.  This inaugural event of the Jean Everitt Journalism Series is free and open to the public. No reservation is required. Kramer's lecture, “What Sickened Old Journalism? New Journalism Finally Is Part of the Cure,” focuses on the current state and future of journalism.

Among this work with the Nieman Conference, Kramer has also served as writer-in-residence and professor of journalism at Boston University and also taught at Smith College.  His books include Three Farms, Invasive Procedures and Travels with Hungry Bear. He co-edited both Literary Journalism and Telling True Stories anthologies and has written articles for The Boston Globe, The New York Times and  National Geographic among others.

Kramer's lecture is the first of a new journalism series, which is endowed by CNU alumna Jean Everitt. The series explores journalism ethics and conscientious reporting. “We are especially fortunate that Jean puts such a high premium on journalism education,” says Terry Lee, associate professor of English and director of CNU's journalism program. “Mark Kramer is a perfect choice for the inaugural lecture. He's a master craftsman and a very accessible writing coach.”
