Paula A. DeSutter( Newport News ) – Paula A. DeSutter, former assistant secretary of state for verification, compliance and implementation, will present a lecture on "Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Treaty Verification: Assessing the International Response to Noncompliance," on Wednesday, April 15, at 4 p.m. The lecture will take place in the Washington Room of CNU’s David Student Union and is free and open to the public. No reservation is required.

DeSutter served as assistant secretary for the Bureau of Verification, Compliance and Implementation from 2002-2009 and has an extensive background in verification, national security and intelligence. She served for more than four years as a professional staff member of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) and was professional staff liaison to Senator Jon Kyl. She was responsible for legislation and oversight of intelligence collection, analysis and activities related to proliferation, terrorism, arms control, the Persian Gulf States, India, Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan. Her publications include Denial and Jeopardy: Deterring Iranian Use of NBC Weapons (NDU Press, 1998).

DeSutter holds a Master of Arts in international relations, a Master of Science degree in national security strategy from the National War College, a Master of Arts in economics, and a B.A. in political science. Her work at the National War College earned her the President’s Strategic Vision Award for Excellence in Research and Writing, where she was a distinguished graduate.
