(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) – Christopher Newport University Provost Mark Padilla announced this week that the University has completed its internal, administrative review and has decided to continue to offer the optional social work major as part of the sociology program.
Social work, which has four full-time professors and 64 students, was one of several courses facing elimination as the University worked to reduce expenses in the wake of at least three rounds of decreased state support in the past two years.
Students receive a bachelor's degree in sociology with a social work major after completing the program requirements, which include field work with local agencies, school districts and other organizations. Students in the program provide more than 7,000 volunteer hours to community organizations to fulfill their field work and internship requirements. The social work program also offers students the opportunity to gain advanced standing in graduate programs.
On July 1, 2009, a newly formed Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work will be formed, reporting to the dean of the new College of Social Sciences.
