(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) - CNU's Center for Service Learning & Social Entrepreneurship will hold its 2nd annual Day of Service on Thursday, August 20, 2009.
This year's volunteer initiative will focus on establishing long term, service-based partnerships between the university and the community. Partnering with the Southeast Community Weed & Seed Project, 350 CNU freshman leadership students and dozens of faculty and staff will spend the day cleaning, painting, weeding and planting alongside neighborhood residents on service projects that benefit the entire community; working with children at Peninsula community centers and assisting with health care assessments.
"The Day of Service is a first important step in what we hope will be a lasting and significant relationship with the Southeast community of Newport News," noted Dr. Roberta Rosenberg, Director of the Center for Service Learning & Social Entrepreneurship and Professor of English at CNU.
The initiative was conceived by university president Paul Trible to highlight the importance of stewardship and community outreach. Designed to unite campus and citizens in collaborative projects for the mutual benefit of the broader community, the initiative identifies defined needs while helping students apply academic knowledge and skills to contemporary social issues.
For more information or to be included in the community projects in the Southeast community, contact Brad Brewer, Assistant Director of the Center for Service Learning & Social Entrepreneurship at (757) 594-7233 or via e-mail at brad.brewer@cnu.edu.
